Unlocking a low carbon hydrogen economy

Hydrogen, together with associated carbon capture and storage, has huge potential to reduce emissions on a path to a net zero future. It will play a critical role and has been identified as a key enabler by the Climate Change Committee.

HyNet North West will produce, store and distribute low-carbon hydrogen to the north west of England and North Wales. By 2030, the project aims to deliver over 80% of the government’s total hydrogen target, as outlined by Boris Johnson in his recent ten-point plan for net zero. Together, these technologies have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by ten million tonnes a year by 2030 – the equivalent of taking four million cars off the road.

The HyNet North West project is a game-changer and ACE is hosting a webinar on 27 January 2021 with John Egan of Progressive Energy, one of the consortium partners behind HyNet North West, who will speak about a project which will realise the potential of the hydrogen economy through the creation of state of-the-art infrastructure.

The project will offer a viable alternative to the use of natural gas, providing a safe transition to a decarbonised world, and will realise the ambitions of local and city authorities across Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire, Warrington and North Wales, helping the wider decarbonisation of the UK.

In doing so, HyNet North West will create jobs. According to a 2020 report from the UK Hydrogen Taskforce, scaling up hydrogen solutions in the UK could support 75,000 jobs by 2035, offering new opportunities for skilled workers in North West England and North Wales, and further afield. HyNet North West offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to effect real change in energy production and consumption, creating the building blocks for a safer and cleaner world for generations to come as it helps the UK towards a Net Zero future.
