Hundreds more apprenticeship jobs on offer at HS2

Five HS2 apprentices set to welcome new colleagues.

HS2 is set to welcome 300 new apprentices, with recruitment opening this week for the first 80 to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week.

More than 1,100 people, of all ages and backgrounds, have already secured an HS2 apprenticeship and are on track to boost their career.

The latest announcement of vacancies for apprentices puts HS2 within reach of its 2,000 apprenticeships target - before civils works even begin on the northern extension of the network.

It also cements the major infrastructure project’s commitment to creating ‘Skills for Life’ – the theme for this year’s National Apprenticeship Week.

Huw Merriman, rail minister, said the latest apprenticeship announcement from HS2 has once again demonstrated how the project is going “far beyond improving connectivity”.

“As HS2 heads towards its target of 2,000 apprenticeships, it’s playing a vital role in ensuring a career in rail is accessible to all, regardless of their background,” he said.

“I would urge anyone looking for a new challenge to consider one of these varied roles.”

A total of 80 apprenticeship jobs go live this week, with more to follow in the weeks ahead, as HS2 expands the nearly 30,000 strong workforce designing and building the new high speed network between London, the Midlands and Manchester.

The first round of jobs to be advertised include opportunities at HS2 Ltd within its procurement, project management, HR, IT and land and property teams.

HS2’s construction partners, and companies in the wider supply chain, are also recruiting for more than 50 new roles and seeking applicants with an interest in tunnelling, civil engineering, stakeholder engagement, scaffolding and plant operations.

Natalie Penrose, head of legacy at HS2 said: “HS2 is launching its biggest ever apprenticeship recruitment drive and I’d encourage anyone, whether starting out in their career, or looking for a complete change of direction, to take a look at what we can offer.

“The ability to earn and learn means it’s never too late to pursue a different profession, and with opportunities in more than 30 different subject areas, there really is something for everyone.”

HS2 has teamed up with colleges and universities across the country to ensure apprentices benefit from a high standard of education and training in their chosen subject area.

Their learning is enhanced through hands-on work experience in HS2’s headquarters, satellite offices and 350 live construction sites, where they will work alongside and learn from some of the very best in the industry.

Apprenticeships enable HS2 to invest in a workforce that will learn, grow and develop throughout its two-decade construction programme.
