Your views needed urgently on the civils technician apprenticeship standard

Your views are needed on the new civils apprenticeship in order to take it to the next stage, says Sheila Hoile.

You may be aware that the Government is in the process of reforming the way that apprenticeships are designed, funded and delivered.  The purpose of the changes is to

·   place control of apprenticeships more firmly in the hands of employers

·   ensure that all apprenticeships are rigorous and responsive to employers’ needs

At the core of the apprenticeship reform is a new Apprenticeship Standard and Assessment Strategy.  The Apprenticeship Standard sets out the Technical Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours that would be expected of someone working in a particular occupation.  The achievement of the Standard will be assessed at the end of the apprenticeship at which point it is expected that the young person will be able to competently undertake the role as set out in the Standard.

"I do hope as many people as possible respond to the survey to continue the momentum that the Technician Apprenticeship Consortium has in the apprenticeship field. The Civil Engineering Standard, if approved, will be the latest in a suite that this year is likely to see 1000 apprentices in training."  Click here to complete

A group of employers from the public and private sector is engaged in defining the requirements of the Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship. The Apprenticeship will provide the foundation for a young person starting a career in civil engineering. The prototype for this standard, which already maps to the UKSPEC requirements for registration as an Engineering Technician, has been running successfully for five years under the auspices of the Technician Apprenticeship Consortium.

The purpose of the consultation survey is to find out whether the proposed Apprenticeship Standard has wide support from across the Civil Engineering sector, both public and private, and from companies both large and small.

You can access the survey at http://fluidsurveys.com/s/tac-consultation/. Please take this opportunity to give us your views as the outcome will set the standard for Civil Engineering Technicians.  Please also feel free to pass on the survey link to any colleagues that you think might be interested in responding.

I do hope as many people as possible respond to the survey to continue the momentum that the Technician Apprenticeship Consortium has in the apprenticeship field. The Civil Engineering Standard, if approved, will be the latest in a suite that this year is likely to see 1000 apprentices in training.
