New programme management hub launched with Costain

Infrastructure Intelligence has launched a new hub focusing on programme management, in association with Costain.

The new hub will be a repository of information, best practices and expert advice on delivering effective programme management. During 2016-17, the area will be populated with expert viewpoints from understanding the difference between projects and programmes to getting it right first time to avoid disputes.

In January 2016, the National Audit Office (NAO) reported that more than a third of major government projects due to be completed over the next five years were at risk of failure. The report Delivering major projects in government,  highlights that of 149 projects, with a combined value of £411bn, a third of these due to be delivered in the next five years are rated as being in doubt or unachievable if action is not taken to improve delivery.

To meet the national needs with this volume of individual projects highlights the increasingly obvious need that some interdependent projects are better managed together in a more coordinated way. We are therefore seeing the growing presence of programme management, or managing a group of projects holistically not only to deliver greater efficiencies but to ensure that these projects produce the intended benefits for stakeholders.

The challenge remains at how best to deliver the complex national infrastructure to meet the UK national needs and we hope that you find this area useful and insightful. We also encourage you to share your ideas and viewpoints on how industry can best meet this challenge.
