CIC appoints Stephen Hodder as new deputy chairman

The Construction Industry Council (CIC) has appointed Stephen Hodder as its new deputy chairman starting with immediate effect.

Hodder will succeed John Nolan, the incumbent chairman, following CIC’s June 2019 council meeting when Nolan stands down from his three year term of office to resume the role of deputy chairman for a final year, in accordance with CIC’s rules.

CIC is the representative forum for professional bodies, research organisations and specialist business associations in the construction industry. A former RIBA president, Hodder has been in practice since 1983 and in 1992 formed Hodder Associates, which received the most important award in British architecture for a single building, the inaugural Stirling Prize for Architecture 

Hodder has written and lectured widely, has been a visiting examiner at a number of schools of architecture and a visiting professor at the Birmingham School of Architecture and the Belfast School of Architecture. He was awarded an MBE for services to architecture in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 1998.

On taking up his new role Hodder said: “Collaboration is the very essence of the Construction Industry Council and I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to contribute to it. The construction industry plays an integral role in our economy. And there are a number of challenges that we now face, including Brexit, the impact on labour and professional skills supply and the lack of diversity among construction professionals.  

“A cultural change is needed to bring a shared commitment to improving the quality and safety of the construction industry product. I'm looking forward to working with everyone in the industry as we continue to tackle these challenges.”

CIC’s current chair John Nolan also welcomed the appointment saying: “Warm congratulations to Stephen on joining CIC’s leadership team and ultimately taking on the role of chairman. I look forward to working with him over the next two years to help the industry become the best it can be and promote true collaboration.”
