Career path: Mark Huggett, Mace

Mark Huggett, Mace

What is your job?

I am construction leader on a number of projects both live and in development. My role incorporates managing activities on construction sites, taking a lead on conceptual projects including design and buildability. I am also required to lead in development of projects that have been procured, this may involve construction methodologies and logistics. I am responsible for driving the Health and Safety culture throughout all aspects of our business.

Who was your first employer and why?

I am a carpenter and joiner by trade. My first job was with Costain in 1990 as an apprentice. I wrote to a number of companies asking for an apprenticeship and decided to go with Costain because I felt the company offered the best opportunity and they also paid more than the then YTS scheme which was in place at the time.

What is special about the point you are in your career now?

I am now in a position that I am able to influence both Mace, clients and contractors. I have developed better skills, knowledge and understanding which helps me to achieve my objectives through influencing others. I have the confidence and ability to see the “bigger picture” and am prepared to take calculated and planned business risks where necessary.

What do you like about your employer?

As I have been with Mace for so long I feel that I am part of the company. They are fully supportive in my career development and always enable their people to take initiatives. I also like the fact that Mace is allied to the most prestigious construction projects in the world and provide excellent opportunities for continuing development.

How long do you think you will stay with your employer?

I have no intentions to leave Mace. I am confident that they will continue to provide the right challenges and opportunities. I would find it difficult to find another employer that could offer me the same level of expectation.

What is exciting about your role?

My focus can vary from nuclear power, sports stadia, and the delivery of iconic sporting structures, planning residential developments and significant infrastructure projects and having one-to-one conversations with employees about safety. It is this variety that keeps me enthused and passionate about what I do.

What about your job gets you out of bed each morning?

The variety of opportunity that my role presents. I am involved in a number of projects, all at differing stages of development. I love the buzz of being presented with new challenges and working to find safe and effective solutions.

What advice would you give your younger self?

To keep in mind that your career should not be financially driven in the early years. It is more about recognising opportunity and taking the right choices that will enable you to develop your knowledge, skills and attitude.

What is the one thing you have done that has been fundamental to your career?

Working with some outstanding people and listening and learning from their experience and advice. However it is important that where an opportunity arises that you are assertive and accept challenges that push you to the limit of your capabilities and drive you to continually improve your skill set through working outside of your comfort zone.

What is the best thing so far in your career?

Working on the London 2012 Olympic projects, from construction, to the ongoing transformation works. I have been engaged with some of the biggest construction companies in Europe and in partnership we have delivered some outstanding results. Latterly as Programme Manager for the transformation works we are delivering the next phase of regeneration in one of the most disadvantaged areas of the country.
