Delivering Project Speed in the north west

Back in June last year, the government announced the launch of its Project Speed initiative. This signalled the formation of a new infrastructure delivery taskforce led by the chancellor to bring forward proposals to deliver the government’s public investment projects more strategically and efficiently. The aim of Project Speed is to ensure the nation is building the right things better and faster than before and is particularly important in revitalising areas of the country like the north west that have suffered from a historic lack of investment.

The taskforce aims to cut down the time it takes to develop, design and deliver vital infrastructure projects and part of its remit is to look at how it can address outdated practices and identify blocks to progress. Projects will include the government’s hospital programme and also its school rebuilding programme.

On Tuesday 16 March 2021 ACE North West is hosting a virtual roundtable to better understand Project Speed, the implications for the region and its impact on the levelling up and Northern Powerhouse agendas. Joining Sean Keyes (Sutcliffe), chair of ACE North West, will be John Cridland, chairman of Transport for the North and president of the Northern Transport Acceleration Council.

The webinar follows the publication of four Project Speed briefings by ACE last month which explore Project Speed in terms of delivery around hospitals, schools, homes and rail. The four briefings explore how the industry can meet aspirations to deliver infrastructure and the built environment “faster, better and greener”.

Taking inspiration from the rapid delivery of NHS Nightingale hospitals, the briefings explore practical measures that need to be taken to unlock delivery. Case studies shared from across the UK demonstrate the tangible steps that can already be taken to make Project Speed a reality.
