Deighton out, O'Neill in as Osborne changes Treasury team

Deighton replaced as Treasury commercial secretary by former Goldmann Sachs chief economist and chair of the City Growth Commission Jim O’Neill.

Full line up in the new Government was unveiled yesterday with the big surprise being the replacement of Lord Deighton as commercial secretary to the Treasury by Goldmann Sachs chief economist and chair of the City Growth Commission Jim O’Neill.

He comes with a brief to deliver Chancellor George Osborne’s Northern Powerhouse and to boost private infrastructure funding.

"I am delighted to confirm Jim O’Neill as the new Commercial Secretary to make devolution and the happen", Tweeted Osborne after announcing details of his latest plans for regional devolution.

O'Neill has spent the last 15 years at Goldmann and is known as the man that coined the acronym “BRIC” to describe the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

As the final post in Osbornes new look Tory Treasury team, he spent time yesterday with Osborne visitin infrastucture project in the north

"Jim is a world leading economist & as Chair of the City Growth Commission, his work has inspired the thinking behind ," Osborne added.
