Stockholm bypass rock tunnels scheme wins BE Inspired award

BIM was pushed to new limits in design of a project that has 18km of its 21km route in rock tunnel up to 100m below ground including three major interchanges to win Bentley Systems Award.

The awesome £2bn E4 Stockholm bypass rock tunnels contract was one of the major winners at software expert Bentley Systems Be Inspired annual design awards this week.

Designers AECOM and Swedish partner AF Consult have been working on the project for client Trafikverket, using the 21km scheme with its 18km of up to 100m deep rock tunnel and three underground interchanges as a BIM pilot. So successful has the job been so far that Trafikverket is mandating BIM for all future projects.

Using state of the art Bentley design tools the design team working in a common data environment, the team has been able to asses and test their work virtually before start of construction next year. Construction involves excavating 19Mt of rock and tunnelling below a world heritage site at Drottingholm Palace and the environmentally valued Lake Malaren.

Construction ready 3D models are part of the tender process for the 50 contractors expected on site, the result of 500 designers from 19 different countries working together.

The Stockholm E4 bypass rock tunnels project was just one of the stars of the Bentley Awards evening which gathered together the best projects and ideas from around the world,all using Bentley software. The annual competition is one of a kind in both global scope and categories offered, covering all types of infrastructure projects.

Since 2004 the Be Inspired Awards have recognised more than 2,000 of the world’s most outstanding infrastructure projects for the purpose of sharing innovative practices in infrastructure project design, engineering, construction and operations, as well as serving to celebrate the outstanding work that is done by architects, engineers, contractors and owner-operators around the world.

Among the finalists this year were extraordinary projects, providing needed infrastructure through innovations around the world.
