Arup and IMC Worldwide lead UK consultancies honoured at 2015 FIDIC Award

Firms awarded the FIDIC Award of Merit for outstanding work on international projects at a ceremony in Dubai during 2015 FIDIC Conference.

Arup and IMC Worldwide were this week recognised and rewarded by the global engineering consultancy community with Awards of Merit for their outstanding work in the international market. The firms, both longstanding ACE members, accepted their honours at the 2015 FIDIC Awards, held this week as part of the annual FIDIC Conference in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Arup was awarded its Award of Merit for work on Abu Dhabi’s Al Bahr Towers which is now the headquarters of the Abu Dhabi Investment Council. 

The two 29 storey towers were designed with architect by AHR (formerly Aedas UK) and feature a unique dynamic shading system open and close to reduce solar gain as the sun moves around the tower. The buildings also have a number of innovative design features that have resulted in a 40% saving in carbon emissions for the towers since they opened in 2012 and were one of the first buildings in the region to be awarded a LEED Silver rating.

IMC Worldwide was awarded an Award of Merit for it outstanding consultancy work to assist a UK funded poverty alleviation programme in Nepal. 

The firm was appointed by the UK Department for International Development to work on the Rural Access Programme [RAP] in Kathmandu, Nepal, a project conceived as a comprehensive poverty alleviation programme. The UK Aid-funded RAP programme uses the construction of transport infrastructure as an entry point for improving the lives of the poorest and most marginalised people in remote areas of Nepal – communities with limited access to goods and social services.

The Awards Ceremony was part of the FIDIC International Infrastructure Conference being held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre at which ACE’s chief executive Nelson Ogunshakin took part in the Globalisation and Mergers & Acquisition plenary session.

Other speakers included Atkins chief executive Uwe Krueger, AECOM chief executive for Europe and Middle East and Nicklas Garemo, managing partner of McKinsey’s Infrastructure Practice in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
