£12m expansion plans to “create an airport Yorkshire can be proud of"

Leeds Bradford Airport has announced a multi-million-pound plan for a new terminal building that would transform its international arrivals capabilities.

Bosses want to get the green light for the construction of a new £12m arrivals hall which would facilitate larger aircraft access to the terminal and improve passenger experience with larger departure gates seating areas, shops and restaurants.

The three-storey extension is part of the airport’s next redevelopment stage and could be completed by the end of 2019 if plans are approved. Furthermore, once the extension was complete, further redevelopment would occur on the existing terminal and a new two-storey aircraft pier would be built to replace the current one.

David Laws, chief executive at Leeds Bradford Airport, said: “These really are exciting times for this airport and we are delighted to be able to now share our plans for phase two of our terminal redevelopment. A thriving region needs a thriving airport and we hope the people of our great county will see these latest plans as a real statement of intent as we continue to strive to create an airport Yorkshire can be proud of. We want to play our part in creating a great first impression for inbound visitors.”

The airport has now also launched a three-week consultation seeking views from the people of Yorkshire to contribute to the future development of their airport.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority chair Susan Hinchcliffe added: “The airport is already a major contributor to the city region economy and we welcome this significant new investment. It will enhance the experience for existing and new passengers as new routes are introduced. In turn, these will open up additional markets for local businesses.”
