THIS FRIDAY: North west metro mayors to speak at levelling-up roundtable event

Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotheram (left) and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham are to speak at an Infrastructure Intelligence roundtable event.

Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotheram and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham will head up a special Infrastructure Intelligence roundtable event this Friday, 2 October, looking at the role of infrastructure investment in levelling up the North/South divide.

The roundtable is the latest in the Infrastructure Intelligence Live series of events and our top panel also includes representatives from the North of Tyne Combined Authority, the woman bidding to be the first female mayor in the country in the Tees Valley, as well as business and think tank representatives from the north of England.

The UK is one of the most geographically unequal developed economies in the world. While cities and large towns in the south east of England are among the most productive and prosperous places in Europe, most in the north and the Midlands lag far behind. The government has made it a key priority to address this inequality and ‘level up’ underperforming and left-behind parts of the UK through a programme of infrastructure development, investing in education, skills and scientific R&D. Infrastructure investment will play a key role in this ‘levelling up’ and so will the elected metro majors and their combined authorities.

The special Infrastructure Intelligence roundtable event this Friday will discuss what actions need to be taken to help level up the North/South divide, particularly the importance of infrastructure investment in that and also the role the metro mayors will play in all this. With representatives on our panel from Greater Manchester, Liverpool City Region, North of Tyne and Tees Valley, it promises to be an illuminating and thought-provoking discussion.
