Government confirms Nick Boles as new minister for construction

New Construction Minister Nick Boles to champion low carbon agenda at Infrastructure Carbon Review One-Year-On conference on 27 October.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has confirmed that following last months’ government reshuffle, the construction brief has been handed to skills minister Nick Boles rather than to business minister Matthew Hancock as previously assumed.

Hancock took over the business brief from Michael Fallon who was promoted to Defence Secretary in the reshuffle. However, following a review of responsibilities, the construction, rail and retail elements of the post have now been passed to Boles.

Boles' construction role was confirmed as he agreed to deliver the keynote address at the Green Construction Board’s Infrastructure Carbon Review One-Year-On conference on 27 October in his role as co-chair of the Green Construction Board.

This event will present the new minister with one of his first opportunities to engage with industry leaders from across the supply chain to hear first-hand the challenges and business opportunities of a low carbon future. 

At the event Boles will speak alongside Infrastructure minister Lord Deighton, Green Construction Board industry co-chair and Skanska UK chief executive Mike Putnam and chief construction advisor Peter Hansford.

The Infrastructure Carbon Review One-Year-On conference is designed specifically to explain to business and commercial benefits across the industry of embracing the principles of the GCB Infrastructure Carbon Review which was launched at the end of 2013.

The morning conference aims to share business experiences and successes where companies have embedded these values; and convince others of the value of the initiative. 

The Infrastructure Carbon Review One-Year-On conference principal objectives:

• Encourage the value chain to take action in reducing carbon and reducing cost in infrastructure
• Re-enforce the key messages of the Infrastructure Carbon Review: that a low carbon approach is a critical business driver
• Maintain the momentum of this message since the launch of the review in November 2013 and update on actions ‘one year on’
• Encourage new participants to pledge commitment to meeting the objectives of the Infrastructure Carbon Review
• Share best practice from across the supply and help the whole value chain to learn from others, boost performance and drive innovation.
