CPW celebrates award success

Building services consultancy CPW is celebrating award success for its £40m Birmingham city centre project. 

The company has taken the CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) West Midlands project of the year award for its work on 10 Brindleyplace.

The near-£40m CAT A commercial refurbishment was completed in June 2023, merging two buildings into one and offering floorplates of 27,000sq ft on each of the 12 floors. 

Putting wellness, sustainability and the latest technologies at the heart of its design, the project achieved several well-recognised certificates including EPC A, BREEAM Excellent, Fitwell 2 star and WiredScore Platinum. 

John Thrupp, associate director at CPW, said: “10 Brindleyplace is a project we’re very proud of for the standard it sets for commercial refurbishments and the recognition from CIBSE West Midlands will hopefully help inspire other asset owners and project teams. 

“We know people are now enjoying the revitalised spaces it offers, all while the building itself boasts impressive green credentials – which is key within the work we complete at CPW.

“Staff health and wellbeing has come more into focus post-pandemic, so we’re pleased this project demonstrates a commitment to maximising these areas, with lots of amenities, a bouldering wall and plenty of green features.

“It was a team effort throughout and our project partners should be equally proud of the award success. To be named the best project in the West Midlands this year is a challenging task considering the quality of work taking place across the region, but we’ve now set the standard for ourselves too and will be aiming to raise the bar even higher next year.” 

The consultancy, which has its headquarters in Solihull, played a pivotal role in delivering the mechanical and electrical engineering requirements for this project, ensuring that it operates efficiently and sustainably. This is demonstrated by the building being carbon net zero and gas free, leading to an energy saving compared to a typical office that could power 117 homes for a year. 

CPW completed the scheme for client CBRE alongside a project team including Associated Architects, Willmott Dixon, Cundall, Thamesis, Workman and MGAC.

Martin Trentham, CIBSE West Midlands vice chair, said: “The judges for this category had an extremely difficult decision but felt that CPW’s entry for a high calibre project of this type, typifies where refurbishment projects, particularly in built-up city centre locations, will become common place and help reduce embedded carbon.”
